Governors One-Stop Shop (SGOSS) Executive Director, Steve Acklam
writes:
"School governance is the most important
volunteering role in education. Governors help teaching staff
provide children with the best possible education and so realise
their expectations and aspirations. There are 350000 governor
places in England and of these 10-12% are vacant at any
one time. The problem is most severe in urban areas. Being
a governor offers the chance to help children and their community
and both learn new skills and enhance existing skills. It
is possible to be an effective governor and add value based
on a time commitment of 6-8 hours per month
School Governors' One-Stop Shop provides a totally free (charitable)
recruitment and brokerage service doing its utmost in partnership
with Local Education Authorities and schools to meet the requirements
of its volunteers. "
